Bath County, Virginia, Confederate flag

[Bath County, Virginia, Confederate flag] by Randy Young, 15 December 2001

I came across this flag originally in a book called "The Returned Battle Flags," edited by Richard Rollins (1995). The book is about the battle flags of the Confederate States of America that were returned to the states after the Civil War. One of the flags, mentioned on page 15 and drawn on page 20, is a company battle flag for a company of Confederate infantry raised in Bath County, Virginia. The flag is described in the book in the following paragraph:

"The flags returned to Virginia are indeed interesting. There is, for instance, a flag of the state, made of fine blue silk, which saw service all through the war, and which was presented by the ladies of Bath County. 'God Protect the Right' is the inscription."
The flag is blue with a series of ornate, white scrolls in the center. At the top of the flag it reads "PRESENTED BY THE LADIES OF BATH," and at the bottom reads "GOD PROTECT THE RIGHT." I have a 4-inch by 6-inch miniature of this flag, which I managed to scan to create the attached flag.
